One brief absence occurred during Operation Desert Storm in 1990-91 when he re-enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps to serve in that effort.
He returned to Salisbury and continued his work here, which encompassed not only the usual criminal investigations, accident investigations, sorting out property and neighborhood issues, but also business crimes that included embezzlements of funds from the town as well as at local churches and businesses. He has investigated numerous high-profile cases and made an arrest in one of the first business computer crimes ever dealt with by the Litchfield court. For decades Mark taught the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program at Salisbury Central School, developing a close working relationship with the school's administration, teaching staff and many hundreds of students over the years. He spent months doing a security assessment of Salisbury Central School around 2008-09, which was shared with the local Board of Education. He devoted half a year compiling the Troop B Search and Rescue Protocol for Salisbury, incorporating applicable state and federal laws regarding command and control by the Fire Department/Chief in consultation with the Lakeville Hose Company, DEP and Appalachian Trail Conference. Dana and husband "Chef Jeff," the Executive Chef at the Hotchkiss School, and their two sons Tyler 17 and Jack 11 have lived in Salisbury for over a decade.
When it comes to the children in Salisbury and the Northwest Corner, Dana has been an extremely active volunteer. She has served on the Salisbury PTO for 6 years, which included being Vice President and Co-President. Dana is also a familiar face on many ball fields - whether it is soccer, basketball or baseball - in the tri-state area. She has coached over 100 kids in the Salisbury Recreation Program as well the Berkshire United Soccer League where she was also a Vice President. Most recently Dana has coached the Webutuck High School Girls' Basketball team. Dana joined the Republican Town Committee in 2010. As one of the SRTC's youngest members, she brings energy and a younger point of view; particularly as a mother involved with area children. Evidence of this is her initiative to organize and host the SRTC Fall FAMILY HOEDOWN Square-dance held at Riga Meadow Farm during the Salisbury Fall Festival Weekend. Families and children are extremely important to Dana, which is a primary reason why she is running for Board of Education. She believes in the small classroom setting if the ends justify the means - meaning test scores and academics should be at a much higher level than schools that have larger classroom levels. Dana will also focus on the important issue of student bullying in the school system. Bullying is not only a nationwide issue, but one that unfortunately does take place too frequently in our own backyard. Dana's educational degrees and work experience background are myriad. She started her business career with Hotel & Restaurant Management from University of Denver where she managed a $4+ million budget for various hotels and resorts, which included the Four Star / Four Diamond Longboat Key Club & Resort in Longboat Key, Florida. She also graduated from Tobe-Coburn in New York City where she studied Fashion Merchandising and Marketing and worked for Bergdorf Goodman, and then managed Ann Taylor in Washington, DC. Moving back to her hometown of Essex, Connecticut, she then pursued her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education from Southern Connecticut State University while working full time as Director of Sales & Marketing at the Saybrook Point Inn and Spa. Dana believes her experience will help her with the Salisbury Board of Education budget. Today, Dana is the owner of ENCORE Designer Consignment Boutique located on Main Street in Salisbury, and works part time for Quarry Hill Arabian Horse Farm in Lakeville where she keeps the books and manages the office. Dana invites you to stop in to ENCORE and meet her personally. Shirley Hurley Candidate for Town Treasurer
Shirley (Rebillard) Hurley grew up in New Britain, CT and was a long time vacationer in Salisbury with her family. In 1950, after she graduated from High School her family moved fulltime to Taconic. She worked at Salisbury Bank and Trust for 35 years doing just about everything - bookkeeping, teller and more, retiring in 1996.
Shirley joined the Young Republicans in 1972 and is one of the Salisbury Town Republican Committee's longest sitting members. It is a rare meeting that Shirley does not attend and she is one member that can always be counted upon when there is work to be done. Shirley first won election as Town Treasurer in 1993 and has held that position ever since no matter the party controlling the Town Board of Selectman. Shirley raised two children in Salisbury and has been a long term supporter of the March of Dimes. Unbeknown to most Salisbury residents is the fact that Shirley's deceased husband Charles "Chuck" P. Hurley, Jr. was the nephew of Robert A. Hurley the 73rd Governor of Connecticut, and the state's first Catholic governor after 300 years of Protestant political dominance. Governor Hurley was a driving force to extend electrification to rural areas of the state. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he quickly mobilized the war production effort and forged a labor-management agreement called "Connecticut's Compact for Victory" that achieved a "no strike pledge" from labor for the unknown duration of the war, and gave the governor sole authority to arbitrate labor disputes during the conflict. The compact became a national model. A fierce opponent of discrimination, he developed a national reputation by integrating housing in the CT National Guard, and also named the first Jewish judges to the CT bench. We hope you will support Shirley's bid for a tenth consecutive term as our Town Treasurer.
